About MedHum-ReadingGroup | |
This graduate level Medical Humanities Reading group aims to encourage a deeper understanding of the Medical Humanities, namely through a consideration of the intersections of medicine with literature, history, and philosophy. By focusing on themes of healing, illness, and death/dying, we will cultivate a more holistic understanding of human well-being, especially as it relates to the practice of medicine. While the biomedical sciences have made great strides in understanding the biological mechanisms of disease, the lived experience of disease is often lost in today’s healthcare practices. Reclaiming such phenomenologies becomes even more vital in the face of the ever-expanding role of technology–both within medicine and the human experience at large.
