Seeking Researchers for the 1977 National Women’s Conference

The 1977 National Women’s Conference (NWC) was the first and only federally funded conference charged with creating a national agenda on women’s issues. The U.S. gathering was inspired by the United Nations 1975 International Women’s Year (IWY) and the global conference held in Mexico City. The NWC attracted approximately 20,000 people to Houston in November 1977, with an estimated 2,000 delegates officially elected from 56 pre-meetings, held in each state and six territories. Combined, these local gatherings attracted an estimated 150,000 individuals.

This internship provides the opportunity to contribute to research on the 1977 National Women’s Conference. Prof. Judy Wu is writing a book on the Asian American and Pacific Islander women who participated in the NWC and subsequently organized regional and national conferences on Asian Pacific American Women’s issues in 1980. She also is working with a team of students at UCI, along with faculty and students at other California universities, to research and write biographies of the delegates elected from California. We plan to contribute to a digital humanities project hosted by the University of Houston. We also are considering a collective publication submission to the California History journal.

Graduate students who are interested in writing research papers could work towards a traditional journal article submission. For undergraduate students who are interested in continuing the project beyond this quarter, we could also work on a UROP grant application. Graduate or undergraduate students also can enroll in independent study to receive academic credit.

Please contact Prof. Wu (j.wu at uci.edu<mailto:j.wu at uci.edu>) for more information. Our research group has been meeting on Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. We can adjust the schedule, if needed.
